New Year, New You – The Cocoon Way

80% of gym memberships started in January are cancelled by March, simply because our focus is nearly always on results rather than the process. 

With all the ‘New Year, New You’ marketing we’re bombarded with at this time of year it’s no wonder we’re highly motivated in January to stick to a diet or workout routine. Now is the perfect time to make resolutions, we’re told. But how about we make it stick this year?

The problem with motivation is that it doesn’t last. The difference between people that stick to change and those that don’t isn’t motivation, it’s habit. 

When it comes to building a habit, it’s important to make sure it’s achievable. Don’t start with an hour of meditation when you’ve never done it before. Start so small that it’s impossible to say no and then build up. Everyone can fit in 1 minute of meditation a day.

 

It’s also key to understand yourself and be realistic. If you’re trying to reduce your sugar intake, try not to go shopping when you’re hungry and remove the temptation in your house. How can you make this as easy for yourself as possible?

Habit-stacking is a great tool for making a new habit stick. If you’re trying to get some more yoga and stretching in, for example, add it to a habit you already have. When you make your morning coffee – why not add a 10-minute routine while it brews?

The aim here is to relish in the process of making a resolution – rather than hitting it hard and then beating yourself up when you don’t stick to it.
