Looking After Your Skin

Skin is the largest organ of the body – and an external map of our physical well-being. What’s going on inside our bodies has a big impact on what appears externally. Everything from alcohol, food and sleep can all contribute to aging skin. In aid of National Healthy Skin Month and we are sharing our top tips on how to best take care of your skin.

In regards to diet, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, safflower oil, green tea, flax seeds, dark chocolate, carrots, almonds and tuna are the ten key foods that contain the properties needed to ensure healthy skin.

Removing, or at least reducing, alcohol intake is also a big driver in improving skin health. Short term effects of alcohol on the skin include the obvious dehydration, dark circles and flushing. While these can be fixed in the short term, the longer term impact is aging. Dehydrated skin wrinkles faster, not to mention the impact interrupted sleep has on your skin over time.

Our skin, and in fact our whole body, spends most of its time in rejuvenation stage while we’re sleeping. Not getting enough sleep, or not managing to reach the crucial REM stages (which is what happens when we have alcohol in our system), prevents our cells from renewing and causes our skin to age faster.
